Same Day Dentistry

The CEREC System

With the implementation of our new CEREC system, we are now able to offer same day crowns, bridges, and onlays where we prepare the materials in our office and fit it to your tooth during your appointment. This is not a temporary crown or onlay, but the final treatment. This is an excellent option when you have only one or two teeth that we need to treat. It’s not only convenient for you, but it’s also exciting for us, because the system supports our philosophy of providing minimally invasive dentistry.

Not all cases are appropriate for the CEREC system. Cosmetic cases, more extensive cases, and implant cases still benefit from traditional lab-created crowns.

Watch the CEREC technology in action in this short video.

Crowns vs. Bridges vs. Onlays

An understanding of the main differences between fillings, onlays, crowns, and bridges is useful for you to understand the advantages of the CEREC system.

When you have a cavity or small hole in your tooth, we remove the decayed tissue and fill the space with a material. This is a dental filling. When the damage is too much for a filling, the next step is an onlay (sometimes called a partial crown). An onlay covers only part of the tooth, whereas a crown covers the whole surface of the tooth. If you have one or more teeth missing, we can use a dental bridge to fill in the missing space with one crown on either end of the bridge.

L to R: a filling, an onlay, and a crown.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry

Teeth are made of hard tissues and are one of the few tissues in your body that cannot heal themselves. Whenever we can, we choose conservative treatments that leave as much of your natural tooth structure in place as possible. The CEREC system promotes exactly that, as it uses an advanced bonding technique that allows us to preserve more of your healthy tooth structure. For example, we are sometimes able to opt for an onlay in situations where a crown might have been the typical treatment choice in the past. CEREC also reduces your odds of needing a root canal.

Patients often say that they love our “same day dentistry” options for the convenience and comfort. We appreciate those things as well. We know your time is valuable, and we understand that wearing a temporary crown isn’t high on your list of fun things to do. But even more so, we love the CEREC treatment system because it helps preserve your long-term oral health.

With same day dentistry, high-quality restorations are delivered to you in less time. It’s a win-win!
